Melvin Jack

Melvin Jack passed away from natural causes in Caliente, Nevada, on September 1, 2026.

Melvin was born in Shiprock, New Mexico, to Stanley Jack and Jeanette Pierce and was an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation. Family was an important part of his early life, and he shared close bonds with his siblings and the older generations who helped shape his younger years. His maternal grandmother, Fannie Nakai Yazzie, played a particularly important role in his life, helping to raise him and holding a special place in his heart.

Melvin also spent part of his younger years attending boarding school. As a young man, he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad, beginning a chapter of his life that would eventually bring him to Caliente, Nevada.

Caliente would become a place that remained dear to Melvin’s heart throughout his life. It was there that he met and married Sherry Ann Harrington, and together they had four daughters: Jessica, Jennifer, Melanie, and Melissa. His girls were the loves of his life and held a very special place in his heart.

For his daughters, there are treasured memories of the father he was during their childhood, the love he showed them, the time they shared, and the way he made them feel cared for when they were together. Life did not always take Melvin down an easy or expected path, and circumstances sometimes created distance, but those memories and that love were never lost. There was always a connection, even across the distance, and his daughters remained close to his heart throughout his life.

After his marriage ended, Melvin eventually returned to his home state of New Mexico, where the years that followed brought both challenges and meaningful relationships. He shared an important part of his life with Claudia “Jean” Tsosie. Together they enjoyed fishing, traveling, and taking care of their beloved dog, Wilko. Their companionship and friendship became a meaningful chapter in Melvin’s life.

Melvin had a lifelong love of fishing and the outdoors. He found happiness in being outside, especially near the water, whether it was the quiet of his surroundings, the anticipation of a catch, or simply sharing the experience with someone he cared about. He was also a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed following his team throughout the years. Melvin also had a creative side and enjoyed drawing, something that brought him a sense of peace and gave him a way to express his creativity.

In 2019, Melvin found his way back to Caliente, returning not only to a place that had always been close to his heart, but to where his daughters and family were. Being back in Caliente brought him closer to those he loved and gave him the opportunity to know his grandchildren in a way that meant a great deal to him. He developed loving relationships with them, was always concerned about their well-being, and enjoyed hearing about what was happening in their lives.

Melvin’s friendship with Bill Davis went back many years, all the way to his earlier days in Caliente. When Melvin returned in 2019, their longtime friendship became an especially meaningful part of his later years. Having an old friend nearby to visit with, share stories with, and simply enjoy everyday life with meant a great deal to Melvin, and his family is grateful for the friendship and companionship Bill gave him.

Melvin’s life was not without hardships, struggles, or imperfections. His journey took him down roads that sometimes carried him far from the people he loved, but those roads never took away the love he held for them. Beneath everything was a man who loved his family deeply and who, in his own way, carried that love with him throughout his life.

Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Stanley Jack; two of his brothers, Stanley Jr.

and Melvin; and Claudia “Jean” Tsosie, who shared an important chapter of his life.

He is survived by his mother, Jeanette Pierce; his siblings, Steven, Daniel, Cara, Christine, Bertha, Brian, Jessica, Marvin, and Tammy; his beloved daughters, Jessica Davis (Michael), Jennifer Reynolds (Michael), Melanie Jack, and Melissa Jack; as well as his many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly.

Melvin leaves behind a life that was uniquely his own: a life with difficult chapters, but also one filled with love, laughter, memories, friendships, family, and the things that brought him joy. Those who loved him will remember the good in him, the moments they shared, and the love that remained even when life was complicated.

May he be remembered with grace for the life he lived, with gratitude for the love he gave, and with tenderness for the memories he leaves behind.

A memorial service honoring Melvin’s life will be held on October 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at

La Plata Valley Baptist Church, 629 NM 170, Farmington, New Mexico.
