Charles Earl Wadsworth Jr. passed away on November 3, 2024, just two days after his 90th birthday.
He was born on November 1, 1934, to Earl and Theresa Wadsworth in Alamo, Nevada. Charles was the fifth, and only son, of Earl and Theresa’s six children. Charles was raised in Alamo, where he graduated from Pahranagat Valley High School in 1953. He loved to tell everyone that his high school basketball team took the state title his freshman and senior years.
Charles married his high school sweetheart, Verla Nelson, in the St. George, UT temple on June 22, 1954. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past June. Charles felt like this was a great accomplishment because only 0.1% of married couples reach that milestone.
Charles worked as a blade operator for the Nevada State Highway for 30 years before retiring. He then worked for Marc Williams, his son-in-law, for two years before starting work at the Nevada test site. He worked there for 15 years before retiring for a second time. Charles also ran his cattle ranch in addition to his full-time jobs. Charles worked hard, and Verla has always said they never went without a paycheck.
Charles and Verla served a mission from 2006 to 2008 in Old Town San Diego, CA. They cherished their time in San Diego and made lifelong friends. After they returned home, they were called to work as temple ordinance workers in the Las Vegas, NV temple. They traveled there every Thursday for about 10 years. These two assignments were a highlight in their lives.
Charles is remembered as “tall, dark, and handsome,” kind, friendly, always smiling, hardworking, and loving. He loved his family and treasured the lifelong friendships he had with both his friends and family.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Theresa Wadsworth, and his older sisters and their spouses: Lois Higbee, Vera (Fred Thomas), Nedra (Joel Shumway), and Lorna (Don Dugger).
Charles is survived by his youngest sister, Sharon McCall; his wife, Verla; and their five children: Earlene (Marc Williams), Leann (Brad Walch), Monte (Annette Wade), Jayne (Ted Stromberg), and Duane (Kathy Kelley). Charles also has 22 grandkids, 65 great-grandkids, and 4 great-great-grandkids.
His funeral is Friday, November 15, 2024, at 11 a.m., with a viewing from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alamo, NV. Interment will be in the Alamo Cemetery, under the direction of Southern Nevada Mortuary.
